Table tennis or ping pong as its popularly known has grown into a very engaging and addictive sport over the years. It is a good recreation and leisure time activity in families. After a while of playing table tennis or just when you are getting interested in the game, you might decide to buy a ping pong table. There are a lot of things you should keep in mind while buying a table for your home.

Initially, if you are just learning the game or your kids are, you might not want to go for such an expensive table. You and your kids can make use of a lower end table tennis table and beat the hell out of it while learning the tricks of the game. During the aggressive playing days, a table can take quite a beating and make sure u don’t waste a lot of money buying a higher end ping pong table. After your kids have matured into serious players, you can think of getting them a good Stiga ping pong table which is a good table for playing at home.

The next thing you have to consider is whether you will leave your table tennis table in a permanent place or keep packing and unpacking it . Most people go for a folding table, due to space constraints, which can be folded and packed away in a corner when you are not playing.

Make sure that the roller wheels are good quality flexible wheels so that they can be moved easily. The braking mechanism on these wheels is very good on a Stiga ping pong table.

Many people are very comfortable playing on a one inch thick table because the bounce is very even. People believe that the thicker a table is, the better the bounce. Very true. But a 0.75 inch table is not bad and will give you a reasonable bounce. A one inch table is preferred because that is the table people grow up playing, especially at the community center or at tournament level. I have a one inch Stiga ping pong table at home because I grew up playing with them at school tournaments.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that your table tennis table should have strong legs and supports to withstand the test of time. Some tables come with an additional leveler which is ideal for surfaces where the floor is not level. These levelers will help in keeping your table straight and level. Other things you will need to check is whether the playing surface of the table is even. Run your eye at the playing surface of the table and check that there is no warping or folds on any parts of the table.

Make sure the net clamps of the table have a soft padding under them so that they do not cause any scratch marks on the table. The clamps should also not dig into the underside of the table. Finally, check out the 30-23 rule on your Stiga ping pong table. Drop a ping pong ball from a height of 30 cm anywhere on the table and it should bounce back to about 23 cm. This 23 cm bounce should be even on parts of the table and you can be pretty sure you have one of the best quality tables.

Ping pong tables can be great if you wish to have a durable table for year round use. An outdoor ping pong table can withstand weather changes and they allow you to leave them outside. This can be very convenient. You want to buy the right type of table to make sure that yours doesn’t warp or get damaged from outdoor elements.

Generally, the best outdoor tables are aluminum tables. These will give extraordinary protection against warping and water damage. You can keep these tables, when they are waterproofed, in any type of environment. There is also a waterproof coating that can be placed on wooden ping pong tables that make them suitable for play outside in any weather too. The higher the cost of materials used in the construction of the table, the more you will have to pay when you buy one. Synthetic and metal tables are generally more expensive than wooden tables.

When purchasing a table for outdoor use, you want to get a table that has a similar bounce on the surface compared to the bounce that would be found on indoor tables. If you are a serious ping pong player, this will be important. If you care more about durability though, you will want to look into special design features that help keep your table safe.

No matter what kind of table you get, a good idea to help protect your table when outdoors is by using a cover. By putting a tarp or a cover over your table, you will protect it from the heat of the sun while also stopping rain from pooling up on the surface. This can be very helpful in keeping your table in its original condition.

If you choose a metal table, then you will have to expect the table to have a slower bounce than a standard indoor table. Also, the spin will generally be less on metal tables.

Another important aspect for a ping pong table is the sturdiness of the legs. By having waterproofed legs on your table, the table will last longer and stay rust free over its lifespan.

Another great option if you are only planning on using your table outside occasionally, is to buy a ping pong table that is designed for indoor use and then only take it outside when the weather is nice. Then you will have all of the same features that standard indoor tables have, while also keeping your table safe from the weather.

The game of table tennis begins during the 1880s in England with the Victorians of the upper class. This game was developed as an indoor alternative to tennis. Back in the 1880s just everyday items were used for playing equipment in the game. The players would set books in a line for a net, either string knotted or a champagne cork with a rounded top was used for a ball, and then for a racket a cigar box lid would be used.

Then the game began to evolve throughout Europe, Japan and the USA. Manufacturers during this time perfected equipment for use in playing table tennis. The first rackets were reported to be frames with parchment on them, or sometimes animal hides may also have been stretched on these frames. The sound the rackets made hitting the ball is what gave the game its name of wiff-waff or ping-pong. There have however been other names used for the game along the way.

In 1901 the name ping-pong was then trademarked by J. Jaques & Son Ltd., which was an English manufacturer. So then the game of ping-pong was played using the rather pricy equipment that J. Jaques & Son made. The other equipment manufacturers called it table tennis. Then Jaques made a deal with Parker Brothers in the USA for the rights to the name ping-pong.

Then another innovator stepped in, James Gibb, who was an Englishman who loved table tennis, he discovered that celluloid balls during a visit to the USA in the year 1901. He found this type of balls to be good for playing the game. Also in the same year E.C. Goode invented the version of the modern racket we know today, by applying a piece of textured rubber onto a wooden paddle. In the 20th century this game was once banned in Russia because the rulers thought the game would hurt the players’ vision.

Table Tennis Association then was formed in 1921 in England, with International Table Tennis Federation being formed in 1926. The first official world championship was hosted by London in 1927.

During the 1950s improvements were made to the rackets by adding a layer of sponge to the rubber, this allowed for more speed and spin on the ball. These were first made by the S.W. Hancock Ltd. Company, which manufactured sporting goods in England. Then speed glue was introduced which made the speed and spin even faster which lead to changes having to be made in the equipment to make the game slower.

Near the close of the year 2000 the International Table Tennis Federation made several changes to the rules, focused on making the game easier to watch on TV.

There are those people that are trying to revive the earlier form of table tennis, to back before the sponge was added to the paddles. This classic form of table tennis is based more on strategy than speed and spin of the ball.

In 1988 table tennis was made an Olympic sport. In 2004 during the Athens game it was the 5th highest watched Olympic sport on TV. In 2008 China won all Gold medals in the Beijing games. In 2010 table tennis will be part of the first of the Youth Olympic Games.
